COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Governor Matt Meyer announced that Monday, Mar. 2 is 302 Day of Service—a statewide volunteer event tied to Delaware 250 that offers litter cleanups, reentry support, + library card drives in New Castle, Dover, and Georgetown. BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Delaware Division of Small Business will begin deploying the next $20M in SSBCI funding this spring to help local entrepreneurs access capital + it will host two webinars on March 3 and March 10 in Dover to review loan and investment programs.  Deleware State Government

CULTURE NEWS

  • Natalia Gatti, a tenth-grader at Sussex Academy, was named Delaware’s state champion in Poetry Out Loud after recitations at Smyrna Opera House on Feb. 19 and will represent the state at the National Finals in Washington, D.C. from April 27 to 29 + she earns a $200 prize.  Deleware State Government

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students in a 14-week culinary program prepared innovative scrapple dishes during a live cooking contest at the Food Bank of Delaware’s Milford campus Wednesday. The competition simulated high-pressure kitchen conditions and will have its photos and recipes shared online as RAPA Scrapple celebrates its 100th anniversary.  WDEL
  • The University of Delaware hosted its annual Black History Month Dinner where students connected with prominent Black leaders in fields such as law, politics, business (and healthcare). Organized by the Biden Institute and the Center for Black Culture, the event offered valuable career advice and networking opportunities.  University of Delaware
  • Assistant Professor James Bridgeforth studied school board challenges including a case where a board banned display of Black Lives Matter and pride symbols, and he recommends that school boards expand community input; Delaware has already passed laws to offer remote public comment and training on ethics.  University of Delaware
  • Delaware-based nonprofit Rodel received a $1.5 million grant to improve the Delaware Pathways program — enhancing tools for high schoolers to choose college and career paths, expanding accelerated coursework, and strengthening its system to track workforce outcomes.  Delaware Public Media
  • A Celebration of Life is being held today to honor lifelong Red Clay educator William F. (Buzzy) Cooke, Junior, who died Feb. 17. Cooke began teaching in 1965 and served at several district campuses while inspiring students and colleagues.  WDEL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After heavy winter storms, DelDOT used 15,743 tons of salt on icy roads, raising concerns for sensitive plants (and aquatic life) along nearby areas. Officials say advanced salt spreaders and brine will help lessen salt runoff and reduce future environmental impact.  Delaware Public Media
  • The Marine Education, Research and Rehabilitation Institute reminds beachgoers and boaters to keep at least 150 feet from seals resting along local rocks and docks. Dog walkers and boat operators are urged (for safety) not to feed or disturb the animals so mothers stay with their pups.  WDEL
  • Delaware State Parks fee season begins March 1 to mark the 75th Anniversary with a yearlong celebration featuring new payment options, special events, and affordable passes. Visitors can explore all 17 parks until Nov. 30 + enjoy expanded services.  DETV

  • Wilmington residents who clear snow from their parking spots may feel they own the space, but local regulations do not recognize this practice+ drivers are advised to review official rules to avoid penalties.  Delaware Online
  • Starwood Digital Ventures is appealing DNREC’s decision to deny its permit for a large data center in New Castle County. The company filed its appeal on Feb. 17 + seeks an in-person hearing with the DNREC Coastal Zone Industrial Control Board.  Delaware Public Media

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local blood donation centers closed Monday and Tuesday due to a heavy snowstorm, causing a loss of about 1,000 donations. The American Red Cross urges residents to donate blood soon to help boost supplies for local hospitals.  WHYY
