COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Wilmington City Council passed a resolution to restore the Rodney Reservoir Community Garden (62 plots and 42 beds will be completed for the 2026 gardening season) at Rodney Reservoir Park to expand local access to fresh food and boost neighborhood pride.  WDEL

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • At 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, the Wilmington Fire Department responded to a two-alarm fire at the Wastewater Treatment Plant at 475 Hay Road & managed a structural explosion that led to an evacuation; officials reported no injuries, contamination, or public danger from the incident.  First State Update

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Delaware lawmakers and education leaders plan to scrap the SAT mandate for 11th graders after March 2 testing as they argue the required exam does not accurately reflect student achievement compared to college-bound testing in other states (the review is part of efforts to adopt more meaningful assessments).  WHYY
  • State education officials recommended closure of Bryan Allen Stevenson School of Excellence in Georgetown because enrollment fell; Education Secretary Cindy Marten will decide after a public hearing on March 9 (if approved, the school will close by the academic year's end) when a final ruling is expected on March 19.  Spotlight Delaware
  • Wendy K. Smith won UD’s highest faculty honor, the Francis Alison Award, and will deliver her Alison Award lecture on Monday, Feb. 23 at 3 p.m. in Gore Recital Hall. Her lecture will explore how paradox theory reshapes leadership and decision-making.  University of Delaware
  • Delaware’s Charter School Accountability Committee recommends revoking Bryan Allen Stevenson School of Excellence’s charter after enrollment dropped nearly half since it opened—school officials plan a public hearing in Georgetown on March 9 while the Secretary of Education will decide its fate on March 19.  Delaware Public Media

  • Today, Delaware Governor Matt Meyer ordered flags at state buildings to be flown at half-staff to honor former state legislators George Bunting and John Viola and the influential Rev. Jesse Jackson. Flags will remain lowered through sundown Saturday (Feb. 21).  Deleware State Government
  • The Delaware Department of Correction is accepting applications for its six-week Citizens Academy starting April 14 in New Castle County, with Tuesday evening sessions from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. that include facility tours and discussions on public safety and rehabilitation; apply by March 20 (applications reviewed on a rolling basis).  Deleware State Government
