COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Family and community will honor late detective Christopher Skrobot today at McCrery and Harra Funeral Home on Concord Pike from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. His funeral is Thursday at Holy Rosary Church on Philadelphia Pike with a memorial fund for his children + expect traffic detours on Philadelphia Pike.  WDEL

CULTURE NEWS

  • Freeman Arts Pavilion launches its 19th season, starting July 8, with more than 20 concerts, comedy shows, and family productions at its new permanent stage and upgraded back-of-house facilities. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 13.  WDEL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kameron Manning advanced from a decorated Air Force career to UD as a Siegfried Fellow, earning the Siegfried Student Award yesterday (Feb. 10) while preparing to become a commissioned pilot.  University of Delaware

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A proposed 1.2-gigawatt data center near Delaware City will use between 9.9 and nearly 20 million gallons per year, tripling Wilmington’s current water use of 3.3 million gallons (Project Washington from Starwood Digital Ventures). Environmental regulators said it does not meet Coastal Zone Act regulations.  WHYY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Delaware’s state budget depends on corporate franchise taxes and business filing fees that bring in between $1.8 billion and $1.9 billion each year. Indirect revenue from related industries adds over $1 billion, supporting public services like education + healthcare, transportation, and public safety.  Delaware LIVE
  • Delaware issued its first paid leave checks in early February under a new family and medical leave program that funds benefits with a 0.8% payroll tax split between employers & workers. Small businesses may face annual contributions up to about $10,000 as the cost is shared or borne fully by them.  Delaware LIVE
  • Delaware lawmakers are studying nuclear power options to help meet rising energy demand. The Nuclear Energy Feasibility Task Force, led by State Senator Stephanie Hansen, heard from experts and now targets finishing its report by the end of July.  WDEL

HEALTH NEWS

  • Delaware Division of Public Health will host the Pathways to Thriving Summit on Wednesday, March 18 at Bally’s Dover Casino Resort — where up to 450 leaders in healthcare, housing, education and more will join breakout sessions, roundtables and planning workshops to improve community health.  Deleware State Government
  • State leaders passed House Concurrent Resolution 82 that directs the Behavioral Health Consortium to map out perinatal mental healthcare gaps and inequities and work with health partners on a comprehensive report due by Dec. 1. The effort follows recent progress to expand perinatal resources.  Deleware State Government
  • Governor Matt Meyer announced today that RFPs are open under a federal rural health plan aimed at expanding care through initiatives including new Delaware Medical School funding, school-based health centers, Food Is Medicine projects, and rural community health hubs (each designed to boost access for underserved residents).  Deleware State Government

  • Delaware girls high school basketball is nearing its end as teams played games (Feb. 2–8). Archmere won two of three before losing to Howard, Appoquinimink clinched two wins with 64 points, Sanford extended a nine-game streak, and St. Elizabeth scored 128 while more games are scheduled this week.  Delaware LIVE
  • Delaware high school boys basketball saw strong wins last week as St. Georges, Dover, and Cape Henlopen continued winning streaks; St. Georges will finish its season this week and Dover will play Sussex Tech on Tuesday and Caesar Rodney on Thursday (Cape faces Milford and Sussex Central on Saturday).  Delaware LIVE
