COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Agencies are running Code Purple emergency shelters — temporary and volunteer-run centers — to offer safe refuge, warm meals and resources during the winter storm and cold temps, and residents are urged to call local numbers or 211 for help.  Delaware Online

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Delmarva Power and Delaware Electric Cooperative have set emergency plans as heavy ice and snow may cause outages from Saturday night through Monday morning. Officials urge residents to stock emergency kits and charge devices while crews remain ready to restore power quickly if disruptions occur.  WDEL
  • The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control warned that sledding or walking on the dunes is illegal because the dunes protect fragile wildlife habitat and nearby infrastructure. Officials said that marked dune crossings are the only allowed points of access.  Delaware Online

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Heavy snow is forecast to hit Delaware this weekend and a Level 1 Driving Warning is in effect as of 12:01 a.m. today + drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and apply for a waiver if essential travel is required via DSHS.  Delaware Online

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • A local guide advises drivers to safely remove ice from windshields by spraying a mix of two parts rubbing alcohol and one part water and turning on the defroster, while warning that hot water may crack the glass (using a windshield cover can help prevent buildup).  Delaware Online
