BUSINESS NEWS

  • Two local startups, Aternium and GradBridge, were added to Philadelphia Business Journal’s Companies to Watch list. Aternium plans to expand clean energy projects with hydrogen plants & GradBridge will offer a new private student loan product in Spring.  Delaware LIVE
  • Ed Fisher relocated his hot dog cart to a temporary spot at Delaware City DMV beginning Wednesday, Jan. 21, where it sits to the right of the entrance following the closure of his Hessler Boulevard location. He said the cart will return when that location reopens.  WDEL

CULTURE NEWS

  • On January 21, the Delaware Division of the Arts announced 27 fellowships worth $184,000 to local visual, literary, and performance artists; awardees must host a public exhibit or performance to showcase their work & enrich community culture.  Deleware State Government
  • Dwain Kalup, executive chef at La Fia Bistro, was named a James Beard semifinalist for Best Chef (Mid-Atlantic) on Jan. 21. This is his second nomination for the prestigious culinary award and highlights the restaurant’s ongoing role in Wilmington’s dining scene since its 2014 debut.  Delaware Online
  • Delaware State Fair announced headlining acts for its 250th event in Harrington starting July 23, including '80s rockers Men at Work — whose hit has over 1B Spotify plays — and country star Hudson Westbrook; tickets for both go on sale at 10 a.m. Jan. 27.  Delaware Online

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Delaware researchers unveiled an optical method to detect magnetic states in antiferromagnets—a breakthrough that could lead to faster computing and quantum advances. They plan to improve the system by learning how to actively control the magnet states for next-generation devices.  University of Delaware

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Delaware Emergency Management Agency is monitoring a winter storm expected to bring freezing temperatures and snow from Saturday evening through Sunday night — residents are urged to stock up on emergency supplies and avoid nonessential travel for their safety.  Deleware State Government

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Delaware residents wanting capybaras as pets must apply for an exotic animal permit from the Department of Agriculture; a home inspection and a $25 fee are required. The rule applies because capybaras are not native and are not on the exempt list.  Delaware Online
  • Residents are urged to protect their pipes this winter by disconnecting garden hoses, sealing home cracks, and wrapping water lines — advice from Veolia recommends these measures. Homeowners should check shutoff valves and keep heat on when leaving town to avoid costly repairs.  Delaware Online

  • Delaware announced schedule changes on Jan. 21: the football team swapped its 2026 home game dates with Coastal Carolina and Merrimack and replaced the 2027 Penn State game with one at Illinois while also facing Vanderbilt and Virginia in nonconference matchups.  Delaware Online
