COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Delaware State Parks will hold a Day of Service on MLK Day, Jan. 19, as part of its 75th anniversary celebrations. Volunteers can join efforts at Wilmington State Parks and White Clay Creek State Park for invasive species removal and reforestation, marking the first of four service days planned for 2026.  WDEL
  • Due to forecasted snow and extreme cold, Blue Line Network postponed its Back the Blue memorial sticker event scheduled for today at Hudson Fields in Milton to honor fallen state trooper Matthew (Ty) Snook; the nonprofit will announce a new date once confirmed.  Delaware Online

  • Yankee Candle closed its Dover Mall store yesterday as part of a plan to shut 20 locations, leaving its Christiana Mall + Tanger Outlets venues open for Delaware shoppers.  Delaware Online

CULTURE NEWS

  • First State Ballet will perform Dreams in Motion at the Baby Grand Theater at The Grand Opera House on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 22 at 2:00 p.m., presenting Fantasy to Dvořák and Nonsense (In the Sense of Innocence) with tickets from $42 to $62.  Delaware LIVE

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Unemployment claims in Delaware rose last week as new filings increased to 512, up from 390 in the previous week. National data from the U.S. Labor Department shows a decrease to 198,000 claims, indicating changes in the job market.  Delaware Online
  • Gas prices for regular fuel in the Central Atlantic region fell to $2.90 per gallon on Jan. 12, down from $2.92 last week, per the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The drop marks an 11-cent decrease since last month + prices remain 4.4% above the national average.  Delaware Online
  • A study from Compare the Market shows Delaware, with a 26.1-minute average commute and a score of 61.8, ranked No. 12 among states when measuring travel times (public transport use and remote work).  Delaware Online

SPORTS NEWS

  • Delaware's 16 best pinball players competed in Wilmington on Jan. 17 to decide who would represent the state at the country-wide finals.  Delaware Online
  • Delaware's Blue Hens lost 97-68 to New Mexico State in their first Conference USA game at Carpenter Center on Jan. 17. Coach Martin Ingelsby said injuries — limited depth slowed the team and they must improve as they face road games later this month.  Delaware Online
