EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ A Colonial educator at Gunning Bedford created the Zen Den (a quiet break room) after a colleague's death to offer staff a place to decompress. The space gives teachers a welcome spot to slow down and relax. Delaware Online
- ➤ Delaware received an $8.7M federal education grant to help local teachers merge literacy, civics and history lessons for grades 4 to 12 (one of 24 national awards). The state will collaborate with the nonprofit Center for Civics Education and UD’s Center for Civics Education to implement evidence-based practices. WHYY
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ State officials say residents can recycle their Christmas trees at the Delaware Center for Horticulture in Wilmington on Jan. 10 (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.), where trees will be chipped into organic materials for local use. Verify with local haulers for curbside pickup if needed. Delaware Online
- ➤ Residents can drop off real Christmas trees at the Delaware Center for Horticulture’s TreeCycle event on Saturday, Jan. 10 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1810 N. Dupont St. in Wilmington; the Davey Tree Expert Company will chip trees for mulch, and a $20 donation is encouraged while trees must be cleared of all decorations. WHYY

- ➤ On Monday, Jan. 5, the funeral for Delaware State Trooper Cpl/1 Mathew T. ‘Ty’ Snook will be held at the University of Delaware Bob Carpenter Center (631 South College Avenue, Newark) with heavy traffic expected from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; drivers should plan alternate routes and extra travel time.
