COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Delaware State Police will honor fallen trooper Matthew “Ty” Snook on Monday, Jan. 5 at UD’s Bob Carpenter Center, with public visitation from 9 a.m. to noon and a service at 1 p.m., and those who cannot attend may watch the livestream on the DSP YouTube channel.  Delaware Online
  • The Tunnel to Towers Foundation raised funds by Dec. 31 to pay off the mortgage of slain state trooper Matthew (Ty) Snook just two days after its goal was announced. The nonprofit honored his memory and eased his family's burden with swift community support.  Bay to Bay News
  • Today the Blue Line Network hosts a Back-the-Blue event at Keene Elementary School to honor Corporal Grade One Matthew (Ty) Snook, who was killed on December 23rd. Drivers can get a free memorial sticker with tickets for donations to support his family; his funeral is set for Monday, Jan. 5.  WDEL

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Data from the U.S. Department of Labor shows Delaware’s initial unemployment claims climbed 88.2% to 781 for the week ending Dec. 26, while national claims dropped to 199,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis (DL).  Delaware Online
  • Gas prices in the Central Atlantic fell slightly last week as the average cost for regular fuel dropped to $2.94 per gallon on Dec. 29 from $2.96 the week before — the region’s prices remain about 4.6% above the national average.  Delaware Online

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Caesar Rodney School District has launched presentations, a new website, and voting details to explain its Feb. 9 operating referendum to local residents — a move to ensure clear information before the vote.  Bay to Bay News
  • Two Delaware high school seniors (Sussex Central’s Rafael Farrera-Juarez and Newark Charter School’s Sadie Polk) were selected to serve as delegates for the U.S. Senate Youth Program’s 64th annual session in Washington, D.C. They will use the weeklong event to learn civic leadership and bring back fresh ideas to their communities.  WHYY
  • Christina School District will switch all Newark-area classes to online learning on Monday, Jan. 5 to ease traffic from Cpl. Snook’s funeral at UD’s Bob Carpenter Center & teachers will send remote instructions by 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 4.  Delaware Online

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Delaware City Refining Company appealed DNREC’s order for real-time fenceline sensors (arguing that the 70-day timeline is unfeasible) after a butane release in late November. DNREC and the refinery are discussing an amended plan to ensure accurate, timely compliance.  Delaware LIVE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Delaware law allows tint on rear windows and back windshields but prohibits aftermarket tinting on front and side windows without a certified medical waiver from the DMV. Drivers who violate these rules may face fines or jail time on repeat offenses.  Delaware Online
  • Delaware State Police updated Corporal Matthew (Ty) Snook’s celebration of life schedule for Monday, Jan. 5 at the Bob Carpenter Center with visitation 9 a.m. to noon and review at 12:45 p.m. Christina School District holds remote classes due to expected traffic, and the Minquadale DMV stays closed.  WDEL

  • The Delaware Health Department opened warming stations across all three counties (Wilmington, Dover, Georgetown) to offer residents safe, warm shelter amid cold weather; centers operate from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. until Jan. 5 as officials remind everyone to stock winter essentials.  Delaware Online
  • Babies marked Delaware’s first births of 2026 when Aria Williams was born at Christiana Hospital 44 minutes after midnight and Kylan Amari Cannon arrived at TidalHealth Nanticoke Hospital at 8:40 a.m. on New Year's Day (families received curated gift baskets and gifts).  WDEL
